UT Permian Basin Middle Hitter Skyler Friel earned First Team All-Lone Star Conference Wednesday night, and Middle Hitter Travana Matthews was named to the league's Third Team as the LSC announced its end-of-year All Conference Teams at the championship banquet in Stephenville, Texas.
Friel was a force up front for UTPB in 2018. The junior from Rowlett, Texas, led the Falcon attack with 275 kills this season, averaging 2.5 per set played, while also leading UTPB by hitting .321 overall on the attack in 29 matches. She also had a team-best 111 blocks this past year, recording 14 solo blocks and 97 assists. She racked up 367.5 points on the year, averaging 3.34 per set to pace UTPB. She had a season-high 20 kills and hit .455 near the beginning of the season in a five set win against Southern Arkansas.
She was also named to the Lone Star Conference Academic Team.
Skyler has improved her skills and athleticism with her hard work in the gym and weight room," said head coach Tim Loesch. "She has blossomed as a team leader and as an outstanding student. I am very proud of her.
Matthews, a junior from Bellaire, Texas, ended the season ranked second in a number of categories for the Falcons. She averaged 2.4 kills per set, ending the season with 264 total kills. She also ranked second on the squad, hitting a collective .268 this season. She ended 2018 with 103 total blocks, nine solo and 103 assisted. She had 320 total points, averaging 2.91 per set on the year.
"Travana has developed into a force on both sides of the net, as an attacker and as a blocker," said Loesch. "Her efforts in the off-season are paying dividends and I am excited to see her continue to improve."
