Meet Texas Tech's new defensive coordinator: Keith Patterson

LUBBOCK - Keith Patterson comes to Texas Tech with 12 years of experience as a defensive coordinator, including six at the Power-5 level with stops at Arizona State, West Virginia and Pittsburgh.

Patterson linked up with Matt Wells at Utah State in 2018 for his second stint with the new Texas Tech head coach as the two were on staff together at Tulsa from 2003-06.

In his lone season at USU, Patterson improved the Aggies nearly 30 spots in scoring defense, climbing from 67th in 2017 to 38th in 2018 with an average of 23.0 points per game. Under his tutelage, USU tied for the nation’s lead with 18 interceptions while forcing a total of 28 turnovers, which ranked third in the country. Additionally, the Aggies proved successful at getting off the field on third downs as they ranked 28th in third down conversion defense at 34.5%.
