Falcons fly to victory on homecoming

Odessa -- The UTPB FalcoOn a historic night by Taylor Null, UT Permian Basin football defeated Humboldt State in their homecoming game 36-17.

On their second drive of the game, the Falcon (2-5, 1-3) offense connected on the big play. Taylor Null found Kristian Brown for the 57-yard catch and run to start the scoring. Brown would then take the direct snap for the two-point conversion. After stopping the Jacks (1-5) on the ensuing drive, the Falcons would drive down the field once again. On the drive Null hit Adrian Walker for a 25-yard play to set-up the Falcons in the red zone. Walker would finish off the drive with an 11-yard touchdown run to make it 15-0 Falcons after the first quarter. The Falcons held the Jacks to just two first downs and out-gained them 166 yards to 48 yards.

The Falcons would continue to move the ball down the field in the second quarter. They would go for it on fourth down at the Jack 15 but Null's pass would be incomplete. With five minutes to play in the half, the Jacks would finally cross midfield for the first time in the game. Null would find Brown again on a 28-yard gain before the end of the half. They would be stopped again on fourth down just before the end of the half.

The Falcons would continue their big play offense in the second half. Null found Baylon Ware who would run through the defense down the middle of the field to beat a pair of defenders for a 62-yard touchdown and the 22-3 lead. The Jacks would not go away quietly. Joseph Sweeney would find Kaleo Garrigan on a 30-yard and 40-yard score to cut the Falcon lead to 22-17.

Null would answer back with a 23-yard strike to Mitchell Leonard and then on the ensuing drive hit Ben Galaviz in stride for a 41-yard strike to make it 36-17 Falcons. Xavier Brooks would come up with an interception to seal the game on the Jacks final drive with a 36-17 final.

Null finished with a school-record 430 passing yards, 31 completions and four touchdowns. Marquis Simmons led the Falcon ground game with 75 yards. Galaviz was the team's leading receiver with 92 yards on eight catches and a score. The Falcon defense finished with seven sacks, La'Daidreain Glasker led the team with a pair. Xavier Brooks and Jaques Tyler each had an interception as well.

The Falcons return to Lone Star Conference play next week when they take on Angelo State at Grande Stadium in Midland, Texas.
