Texas State Trooper's speech on distracted driving goes viral

ECTOR COUNTY -- Oscar Villareal’s heart-wrenching speech hit home for many Cisco Logistics truck drivers he spoke to Monday.

“His presentation was very strong on the subject matter and there was, there was some tears shed during the meeting,” said Cisco Logistics District Manager Kolby Melton.

Facebook users seem to agree.

His speech posted by Cisco Logistics has been shared thirteen thousand times reaching half a million users.

Days later, Cisco Logistics invited him to the oil show, so he could encourage truck drivers from other companies to drive safely.

Villareal says Texas hasn’t had a day without a fatal crash since 2000 and most of these incidents could have been avoided if drivers weren’t multitasking in the car.

“That’s not the way we should drive,” he said. “You should clear your mind and focus on the task at hand, that being getting from point A to B and return home at the end of the day, so we don’t have to knock on your door.”

He says it would be a dream come true if Texans could commit to putting away their phones on the road and stop more families from being shattered.

“Their life will forever change in an instant when they receive that message,” he said. “They won’t forget me, and I won’t forget them. It’s something that we don’t want to do. It’s probably the hardest thing we’re going to do that day.”

Villareal said he’s willing to setup a driving safety presentation for anyone who emails a request to him at Oscar.villareal@dps.texas.gov.
