Suspect accused of starting grass fires in Gaines County

GAINES COUNTY -- Authorities have arrested a man who they say is responsible for several grass fires in Gaines County.

Bernhard Martens Klassen, 23, has been charged with Arson, a 2nd Degree Felony.

According to the Gaines County Sheriff's Office, on Tuesday night their deputies and the Seminole Volunteer Fire Department responded to more than two grass fires that were deemed suspicious.

Later that night the sheriff's office received a call about a suspicious vehicle that may have been connected to the fires. That vehicle was found and stopped by Seminole police officers and the driver was identified as Klassen.

Deputies were then called in and following an investigation, Klassen was arrested. The sheriff's office says that their investigation is ongoing and that more charges are possible.

The Texas Rangers, Seminole Volunteer Fire Dept., Texas State Game Warden, Texas Department of Public Safety and Seminole Police Department all assisted the Gaines County Sheriff's Office with the investigation.
