Senator Ted Cruz has released a statement regarding the death of one Border Patrol agent and injury of another Sunday morning after being injured while on patrol in the Big Bend Sector.

His statement is the following:

"Our condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends of Border Patrol Agent Rogelio Martinez, who was killed this morning in the line of duty. We are also praying for the full recovery of his partner, who was also attacked.

This is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat that an unsecure border poses to the safety of our communities and those charged with defending them. We are grateful for the courage and sacrifice of our border agents who have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe.

I remain fully committed to working with the Border Patrol to provide them with all the resources they need to safeguard our nation."

According to the U.S. Border Patrol, Agent Rogelio Martinez and his partner were responding to activity near Interstate 10 in the Van Horn area when they were both injured.

Martinez's partner reported the injuries and that they were in need of help. Additional agents responded and assisted both of the men before taking them to a local hospital.

The U.S. Border Patrol reports that Agent Martinez passed away from his injuries at the hospital. His partner, who is not identified, remains at the hospital in serious condition.

According to The Associated Press, the FBI has taken over the investigation.
