UPDATE: Odessa police identify victim in I-20 crash

UPDATE: Police say that a Monahans woman was killed in Tuesday’s crash.
The victim has been identified as 54-year-old Genoveva Hernandez.
The following comes from the Odessa Police Department:
A Monahans woman is dead following a major crash that occurred this morning in Southeast Odessa.
On May 5, 2020 at approximately 0732 hours, Odessa Police responded to IH-20 and East Loop 338 in reference to a major crash involving an 18-wheeler.
Investigation revealed that an 18-wheeler, being operated by Vicente Aguirre, 74 years of age, of Odessa, was traveling eastbound in the outside lane of the 5900 block of East IH-20.
A white Nissan Sentra, being operated by Genoveva Hernandez, 54 years of age, of Monahans, was traveling eastbound in the inside lane of the 5900 block of East IH-20.
Investigation revealed that Hernandez made an unsafe lane change and was struck by the 18-wheeler. Hernandez was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced deceased by medical personnel.
Next of kin have been notified and there were no reports of any other injuries.
The investigation continues.

According to the Odessa Police Department, the crash happened on I-20 at East Loop 338.
All eastbound lanes of I-20 are shut down.
Drivers are urged to take alternate routes at this time.
No other details have been released on the crash.
