New Mexico announced its first COVID-19 death on Wednesday.

The patient died in Eddy County. State health officials say the man was in his late 70s with underlying health issues.

Eddy County health officials say he went to a local hospital on Sunday and died later that day.

Health officials say his COVID-19 test came back positive on Tuesday.
