Midland teen and father killed in plane crash

A Midland teen and his father have been identified as the victims of Thursday's plane crash.
According to DPS, 16-year-old Gavyn Cooper and 39-year-old John Cooper were in a Cirruss SR22 when it crashed shortly after taking off from the Midland International Airport.
Gavyn was a student at Midland High School and was a quarterback for the Bulldogs.
Trinity School of Midland released the following statement on their passing:
The Trinity community extends its deepest sympathies to the Cooper family. K5 Aide Chassity Cooper and her daughter, Callie Cooper ’25, suffered a terrible loss on the evening of Thursday, May 31, 2018.
Gavyn Cooper, Chassity’s son and Callie’s brother; and John Cooper, Chassity’s husband and Callie’s father, were killed in a plane crash on the evening of Thursday, May 31, 2018.
The NTSB has taken over the investigation of the crash with assistance from the FAA. The cause of the crash has not been determined at this time.
