Meth discovered in candle shipment at the border

LAREDO -- A shipment of commercial candles coming across the border were found to have more than just a pleasant fragrance.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, officers at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo stopped a truck hauling a commercial shipment of wax candles for a secondary inspection.

There officers used a non-intrusive imaging system and a canine team to search for any possible narcotics.

The search revealed that meth was found commingled with the candles.

CBP states that the shipment weighed nearly 736 pounds. They are not able to determine the street value of the meth due to how it has hidden.

“There is no limit to the lengths that transnational criminal organizations will go to try to smuggle narcotics into the U.S.,” said Port Director Albert Flores, Laredo Port of Entry. “This large interception underscores the seriousness of the drug threat and the resolve of our frontline officers and their effective use of experience and technology to zero-in on and stop these narcotics loads.”
