Man killed at Medical Center Hospital died of self-inflicted gunshot wound

ODESSA -- The man that was killed at Medical Center Hospital on Monday, October 8 died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to the United States Marshals Service, On October 7, 2018 a United States Marshals Service inmate, Andres Rios 26, of Midland,
Texas, being detained by the officer from GEO Group at the Ector County Correctional Center was hospitalized at Medical Center Hospital due to a failed suicide attempt.

On October 8th Rios assaulted, overpowered and disarmed one of two officers posted at the hospital.

After gaining control of the firearm, Rios utilized it to commit suicide.
In following standard operating procedures, the Texas Rangers and the Ector County Medical Examiner are handling the investigation.

The United States Marshals Service is in the process of reviewing the performance and procedures of the Ector County Correctional Center.
