Nine suspects arrested following Andrews County cockfighting bust, 23 fighting roosters seized

ANDREWS COUNTY, Tx. (KOSA) -- Authorities in Andrews County made nine arrests on Saturday morning following a cockfighting bust.

According to the Andrews County Sheriff's Office, their deputies responded to the 2700 block of NE 480 at 9:30 a.m. after receiving a call about suspects fighting roosters.

When the deputies arrived, they reportedly found a large group of people fighting roosters in a pin. Several members of the group ran away when they saw the deputies.

The Andrews County Sheriff's deputies were able to catch each of the suspects, and Texas Parks and Wildlife, DPS and the Andrews Police Department were called in to assist.

A total of nine suspects were arrested at the scene, and 11 citations were issued.

Authorities found 23 fighting roosters, blades used in cockfighting, bottles of chemicals using in cockfighting, other cockfighting paraphernalia and more than $10,000 in cash.

The sheriff's office says that the following suspects were charged:

-Johnny Hernandez, 46, charged with Cockfighting Cause/Earn/Fight, a State Jail Felony

-Ricardo Garcia, 30, charged with Cockfighting Own/Train/Equip, a Class A Misdemeanor, and Evading Arrest, a Class A Misdemeanor

-Roberto Armendariz, 39, charged with Cockfighting Own/Train/Equip, a Class A Misdemeanor, and Evading Arrest, a Class A Misdemeanor

-Andres Lopez, 31, charged with Evading Arrest, a Class A Misdemeanor

-Steven Hernandez, 36, charged with Evading Arrest, a Class A Misdemeanor

-Saul Contreras, 38, charged with Evading Arrest, a Class A Misdemeanor

-Victor Contreras, 47, charged with Evading Arrest, a Class A Misdemeanor

-Jesus Garcia, 32, charged with Evading Arrest, a Class A Misdemeanor

-Alberto Bejarano, 43, arrested for unrelated warrants
