ECISD: Snapchat threat against Bowie Middle School not substantiated

ODESSA, Tx. (KOSA) - ECISD has confirmed the Snapchat threat targeting Bowie Middle School has not been substantiated.

Communications Officer Mike Adkins said there was no threat against the school and the campus did not go on lockout.

Investigators are trying to figure out who sent out the message, so he or she can be charged for making the threat.

Adkins said ECISD always takes these situations seriously and the district has posted more officers outside the school out of caution.

ECISD released the following statement:

"This morning a female student at Bowie Middle School reported a Snapchat post threatening to shoot up the school. We immediately notified our Ector County ISD police and they began investigating it. As a precaution, we brought extra officers to the campus. The social media account had no profile and officers have not yet been able to connect the threatening post to anyone. While our police officers do not believe this was a credible threat, we do take this type of incident seriously. The investigation will continue, and if someone is identified that person will face criminal charges. We do want to clarify, the school was never in lockdown and there was not an active shooter.

Unfortunately, we have seen more and more of these types of threatening posts in the past couple of years, and when our police believe they are not credible (like today’s) we keep the regular school schedule as they investigate and look for leads. We want to reassure parents if we ever come across a serious threat we will send information right away. We have found through experience that kids typically make these kinds of social media threats in order to have school stopped and we have found that when given a lot of attention the threats continue and, often, increase in frequency.

The safety of schools and offices is our top priority. We want to thank the student who came forward with this information. We will continue to emphasize, the idea “if you see something, say something.” This is the first line of defense in keeping us all safe. We also want to thank our ECISD officers, the Bowie staff, the students and parents for their patience during the day."
