FIRST ON CBS7: Border Patrol agent in Brewster Co. charged with continuous sexual assault of a child

BREWSTER COUNTY, Tx. (KOSA) -- A U.S. Border Patrol agent has been arrested on a child sex crime.

Michael William Barends, 42, was arrested on Friday and charged with continuous sexual assault of a child.

According to an arrest affidavit, an investigation began on Monday, January 13 when an outcry was made and shared with the Brewster County Sheriff's Office.

The victim told authorities that a man, identified as Barends, had assaulted her more than 20 times since she was 12 years old.

A warrant was then issued for Barends who was taken into custody.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says that the agent was off-duty and that they will be cooperating with the investigation.

"CBP takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously and does not tolerate criminal activity within its ranks," stated CBP in a release. You can read their full release here.

Barends' bond has been set at $400,000.
