BIG SPRING, Texas (KOSA) - The winter storm alert for west Texas may have ended, but the snow it brought caused problems on the roadways all day Friday.

Hundreds of unlucky travelers spent the night in 14 hours of standstill traffic.

Doug Gressett was returning to his home in Midland after visiting his son in Dallas when he got stuck in traffic around Coahoma at about 7 pm.

Gressett says he spoke with Coahoma Fire and Rescue, who told him that two 18-wheel trucks had wrecked and the slow traffic was due to the accident.

Gressett and hundreds of other people were forced to spend the night in their cars on the interstate.

“We were literally in the middle of nowhere. We couldn’t go backward. The roads were blocked if we tried to turn around and go back. The roads were blocked going back towards Sweetwater, and we couldn’t go forward because we couldn’t get to Coahoma. We couldn’t get to Westbrook. we couldn’t get anywhere,” said Gressett.

The winter weather made roadways difficult for holiday travelers.

One person says he slid off the road and was stuck in a ditch for over seven hours before a family came and pushed him out.

“We did see TxDOT with scrapers occasionally. Not very often and not doing enough that it got us moving. the interstate opened up about 4 am, and they started letting sporadic traffic through, but it was very few cars at a time,” said Gressett.

Texans weren’t the only people stranded on I-20 last night.

Christina Rivera traveled from her home in Alabama to visit family here and says she has never experienced anything like this before.

“This is my first time, and I wouldn’t want to be like this in the same place again. I spent the night here, new years. Instead of me being with my family celebrating the new year, I was stuck in here. that’s something I don’t wish upon anybody,” said Rivera.

The stoppage cleared up around Big Spring, but travelers were backed up from Big Spring to east Midland for most of the day.
