ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) -

Jesus House in Odessa hosted its Season of Warmth lunch ahead of thanksgiving where they worked to make sure Odessa’s homeless will survive this winter.

At the luncheon, Jesus House volunteers fed hundreds of people in need of a hot meal, but hunger is only half the battle in the wintertime.

“Our mission is to make sure no one dies through the winter season,” Jesus House Odessa’s Director of the Men’s Facility Elisha Ramirez said.

It’s been nice out this week but when the temperatures start to drop, life can become dangerous for the homeless.

“We do need that winter stuff to be out here in the cold to survive,” Vanessa Jones said. “We have a lot of friends that have passed away in the winter.”

To stop that from happening, volunteers handed out not just food but essential winter gear like coats and sleeping bags.

Organizers said more people need help this season because of the coronavirus.

“We know that rent is really high right now and people are losing their jobs left and right because of the virus,” Ramirez said. “So, we are really stepping in and making sure that they have everything that they need.”

“We’re gracious for it,” Jones said. “Cause they don’t have to do that. They’re helping the homeless and we need that help sometimes.”

Anyone who couldn’t make it to the luncheon can still get winter supplies by visiting Jesus House Odessa on East 6th street Monday through Thursday at 11:00 a.m..
