FIRST ON CBS7: Investigators say Odessa firefighter high on mushrooms when he shot and killed fellow firefighter
PUEBLO COUNTY, Colorado (KOSA) – An arrest affidavit obtained by CBS7 from the Pueblo County, Colorado Sheriff’s Office reports Odessa firefighter/EMT Evan Gaw was high when he shot and killed fellow firefighter/EMT Michael Mack.
Sheriff’s deputies say Gaw admitted he had taken mushrooms earlier in the day. Investigators found Gaw naked in the KOA campground after responding to a ‘shots fired’ call.
They say it was 28 degrees outside at that hour.
According to the affidavit, Gaw resisted arrest and had to be tased at one point. However, only one prong stuck to his arm, so it didn’t work.
Later, deputies say they had to tase Gaw directly on his hip, but that still didn’t calm him down.
They were eventually able to handcuff him and put him in the backseat of a patrol vehicle, but they say he continued to throw himself around inside the car.
While in custody, the deputies say Gaw told them, “I’m sorry I killed my best friend in the whole world,” and, “I’ve taken 3.2 grams of ‘shrooms.’ I’m high as ba**s.”
Gaw also claimed he wrestled with Mack over a gun, but it’s not clear who owned the gun or what the argument was about, according to the affidavit.
Gaw claims Mack was going to shoot him first, so he shot in self-defense.
His wife, Sarah, told investigators she didn’t know why the two had gone to Colorado, she just knew they had taken time off for a trip.
At last report, Gaw is still in the Pueblo County jail.
