ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) -

For the first time in the Permian Basin’s history an advanced hearing device was activated for a patient.

That patient had suffered from serious hearing loss for so long his hearing aids are no longer strong enough to help him.

So, the cochlear implant is being used to bypass those damaged areas and stimulate his hearing yet again.

Patients used to have to drive all the way to bigger cities like lubbock to get this type of operation until recently.

“We have finally have a surgeon in the area that’s doing them which brings it closer to home,” Audiologist Sally Miranda said. “So, with him being able to do the surgeries and is being able to take care of the patients afterwards now we’re bringing it all home.”

The audiologist explained this patient will need some time to adjust to the implant but in a few weeks, he’ll be able to hear far better than he ever could with a hearing aid.
