The people didn’t stop coming and the food didn’t stop cooking. For hours, volunteers loaded to go plates with all the fixings.
"It was amazing long hours, all worth it," said Nati Saldivar, the founder of the North Side Movement.
One homeless man I spoke to appreciated the meal, as it gave him a sense of belonging.
"It reminded me that I'm acceptable," said Vincent Esch.
The North Side Movement fed everyone that came through the doors, regardless of income level.
"It was important that we didn’t start as a soup kitchen…if you were working and you didn’t want to go and order a burger, you could come here,” Saldivar said.
That included a group of utility workers from out of town who are repairing power lines.
"We’ve been at it since Friday working in the middle of the night, all day long,” said Ray Marichalar.
They were driving through town when they saw a restaurant open...to their surprise it was giving away free meals
"That's what we were planning for Thanksgiving dinner was Stripes burritos, fried burritos," he said with a chuckle.
Though these volunteers could have spent their Thanksgiving relaxing with family, they said the success of dinner made it worth it. Next year they want to do it again, hoping it will be even bigger.
