MIDLAND-An online petition is aimed at The Midland Park Mall, which will be open to shoppers for the first time ever on Thanksgiving Day.
Midland park mall is one of many Simon malls across the country opening on Thanksgiving Day.
“It’s a day for families, and I don’t think the mall should be open on thanksgiving,” said Jennifer Nestor.
Nearly 19,000 have signed Change.org petitions against the earlier-than-ever hours.
“I think it would be crazy,” said one Midland woman.
“It isn’t appropriate because we should be celebrating about our countries’ history and spending time with family,” said one Midland girl.
A petition started by a Midland mall employee has gained 19 signatures. Petitioner Tanya Portillo says, “some/most staff will have to work up to 24 hours due to staffing shortages.” According to mall officials, the mall will be open for 26 hours straight starting at 8:00 p.m. Thursday.
"We’ve heard from our customers that they would love to come in and shop early,” said Midland Park Mall Director of Marketing and Business Development Lyndsey Kees.
At least one department store, JC Penney, told media outlets that they will offer overtime to employees who work Thanksgiving Day. What’s the mall’s reaction to the petition?
"That’s not something that I’ve heard about, but from listening to customers across the country, we think it’ll be great especially those with busy holiday schedules,” said Kees.
Some stores like Dillard’s will not open on Thanksgiving. The Midland store’s manager says it will open at 8:00 a.m. on Black Friday.
Mall officials say its up to individual retailers how they handle scheduling.
