How far is a community willing to go to save their local high school band? As far as playing in the band themselves.
The food, the fans and the football- It’s just another West Texas Friday under the lights.
But the Band gets the night moving up to a faster tempo. A couple of years ago the Marfa High School Marching Band fell silent.
“After the enrollment went down, the band suffered,” said Daniel Hernandez. He was one of the many community members who did not want to be hushed.
“The new administration is doing a good job of pulling resources and we still have a concert band, but many of the students missed football season,” Hernandez said.
So the Marfa Community Band was formed.
“Community band to us was something that kind of started out of thin air,” he said.
The majority of members are students in high school, while a few volunteers like Hernandez donate their talent.
“Anybody who wants to play at football games and bring energy they can come play with us,” he said, “To have a band there it brings the level up in the atmosphere and makes things exciting whether you're winning or losing.”
The last football game was tonight but the band is always looking for volunteers. If you're interested you can call 432-295-0045
