Precautions Taken Due to Non-Specific Threats 11/8/13
On Tuesday, November 5, 2013, a note containing a non-specific threat against the school was discovered by an employee of the District on the floor of the restroom at Reagan County Elementary School. The employee immediately reported the existence of the note to the RCISD administration, who in turn reported the threat to local law enforcement officials. Law enforcement promptly responded to the report and conducted a thorough search of the school to determine if any immediate danger existed to students or faculty of RCISD. The law enforcement search did not uncover anything posing an immediate threat, but it advised continued vigilance on the part of school officials to be aware of anyone or anything that was out-of-the-ordinary at school.
Thursday, November 7, 2013, another note containing a non-specific threat was discovered by an employee in a classroom at the Reagan County Elementary Campus. Once again, the District immediately informed law enforcement of the existence of the note, and law enforcement officials, again, promptly and thoroughly examined the RCISD premises for the existence of anything that would pose an immediate threat to students of faculty. The examination of the school premises revealed nothing posing such a threat.
Please be aware that that safety of RCISD students and staff is the paramount factor in the decision-making process when these types of circumstances arise. RCISD will continue to work closely with law enforcement officials to maintain the safety of everyone who is on RCISD grounds, and the District is currently working with law enforcement to enhance its existing security measures with the following:
1. Conducting routine patrols around and through District facilities;
2. Random visits to District campuses and facilities; and
3. Checking perimeter doors to ensure that they remain locked and secure.
Because of our heighten vigilance to security measures, we understand that some inconveniences to our parents, students, and employees may be encountered. Please be patient with these measures.
Thank you for your cooperation, and we will continue to keep you advised as this matter develops. If you have any information relating to these incidents at our schools, please do not hesitate to contact Jeff Garner, with the Reagan County Sheriff’s Department at (325) 884-2424.
