McCamey, TX-The past week has been a mournful time for Upton County after the shooting death of Deputy Billy Bubba Kennedy.
A group of family and friends in McCamey organized a softball tournament today as a benefit to raise money for the Kennedy family.
"What better reason to play softball today than a benefit for Mr. Bubba Kennedy," said Efren Hernandez, one of the organizers of today’s event.
Today’s softball tournament was a joint effort put on by Efren Hernandez, Pablo Vaiza, Junior Martinez, Jimmy and Isadoria Bermudez.
Hernandez says their community is devastated by the loss of Kennedy.
"It hits all of us in our hearts because it's a small community, and it’s devastating because none of these things happen around here," said Hernandez.
A cake made in honor of Kennedy and refreshments were raffled after today’s tournament.
All the entry fees and funds raised from today’s game will be going directly to the Kennedy family.
Hernandez says their community has each other’s back and help one another out as if they were their family.
"We always pitch in and we always try to help each other whether it may be a cancer patient, or whether it may be somebody who needs surgery, or whatever it is around here. They announce it and we all show up and make sure we take care of our own all the time," said Hernandez.
Hernandez and friends say the community of McCamey is very close-knit and are always looking out for one another. Their prayers go out to the Kennedy family.
