Soup Kitchen Lacking In Funds 9/11/13
September 11, 2013
Odessa - One organization that strives to make sure everyone has a free meal is now struggling financially and may have to start charging. Jesus house in Odessa serves hundreds of homeless or low-income residents a week and say with the low funds, it’s hard to keep their doors open. It has been a fighting battle for this group this past year, they say it takes about 500 dollars a week to keep the kitchen up and going, but with only 800 dollars in their budget things are looking pretty dim.
“You know we teach people here, not only about eating meals, but how they can handle themselves in the community,” said Jesus House Pastor Donny Kyker.
The soup kitchen’s money began to dwindle over the summer when the amount of people needing their services increased while they were serving school children. However even though their numbers have gone down since school started, they are still seeing an increase as hundreds come to the Permian Basin to work.
“They are told to come here because there’s jobs but they’re not being told there’s no place to stay,” said Church Under the Bridge Founder Evan Rogers.
When Church Under the Bridge out of Midland found out that Jesus House was in need of assistance they stepped right in and asked for donations on Facebook. Jesus House says the lack of funds could force their visitors to pay a donation of two dollars for what was once a free meal.
“We would rather not because we already know that these people live on the streets or live in extreme poverty, and that’s what a soup kitchen is there for, to help these people out because everybody needs to be fed,” said Rogers.
Jesus House has always had pride in serving extremely nutritious meals, but now with money running out, there has been a change in the menu.
“We had to go to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches a couple of days ago just to let everybody know that we are in dire strains right now. We need the community to really kind of help with more because I believe the closer we get to winter time, we will be feeding more people,” said Kyker.
