Construction Scam Targets Midlanders 9/6/13
MIDLAND - A father-son team has been arrested in connection with a construction scam, and Midland police are looking for others who believe they were victimized by the pair.
John Daniel Lopez, 33, and Thomas Daniel Lopez, 55, have been soliciting work in Midland neighborhoods under the guise of Desperate Housewives Construction. The Lopez pair, using family members to pose as employees, act as knowledgeable and competent contractors, leading homeowners to believe that they can do high quality work.
After the homeowners confront the pair about substandard or incomplete work, the father and son attempt to engage the victims into agreements to payback money under a payment plan to avoid being reported to the police, but the money is never refunded. They have engaged homeowners in contracts to complete renovations, brick grout repairs, decks, painting, storage buildings, and tree trimming.
A warrant for theft over $1,500 and less than $20,000 was obtained for Thomas Daniel Lopez. A warrant for theft over $1,500 and less than $20,000 from the elderly was obtained for John Daniel Lopez. The pair is said to have a history of engaging in similar scams.
Anyone who believes they have been made a victim of these crimes is advised to call the Midland Police Department at 685-7108.
