City of Stanton Is The Island Of West Texas 8/16/13
CBS 7 News
STANTON-Stanton...the island of West Texas...surrounded by farmland and very few businesses.
Many businesses are actually interested in building, but the problem is that a lot of the land has been in the families of landowners for generations.
"I don't feel the need to sell...it was given to us by our parents," said Babe Lindsey, landowner in Stanton.
Lindsey's husband went on to say that if his wife and sister-in-laws were given a plan, then they might change their minds.
On the other hand one resident is excited about the growth and says change is always good and would like to see more restaurants and stores built.
"People have to travel to Midland if they want to go to Wal-Mart or Target...it would be nice if they can stay here in Stanton," said Amado Gonzales, resident in Stanton.
City Mayor, Justin Burch, says any opportunity to grow is always going to be a good thing, and now with many jobs moving into town, Stanton has that chance.
" I think this will benefit everybody...we could bring in more businesses and restaurants...things like that, that really bring a community together," said Burch.
Burch said that they're trying to figure out how to fix this standstill, but he says at the end of the day the decision is in the hands of these landowners.
It was clear to me that his goal is to get them on board.
