An elderly Odessa man gives a stranger a ride, but the act of kindness turns dangerous when the stranger pulls out a gun, steals his car and leaves him and his dog with no place to go.
80-year-old Darrell Venable had just closed up his shop –Aladdin’s Cave of Treasures on Kermit in Odessa when the stranger asked him for a ride.
"He was a clean cut man, good haircut, good shirt,” said Car Jacking Victim Darrell Venable. "He looked like someone I could trust, so I said OK.”
Venable brought the man towards Andrews highway and the loop, with the city in the rearview mirror, the stranger asked him to turn, then turn again. That's when he knew something was wrong.
“When I didn’t see a truck, I began to get suspicious,” Venable said. “About that time a gun showed up in my face, he told me he’d blow my head off, reached over and got my wallet and cell phone and said, ‘Take your shoes off’."
The man left him on this deserted road in triple digit heat, a quarter mile from the highway, with no cell phone, no wallet and no shoes.
"I hated to take another step on the pavement because it hurt so bad," Venable said.
Venable says the man who got away with his white 2002 F-150 pickup had a dark complexion, is 30 to 35 years old with short hair and was wearing a tan, brown and yellow plaid shirt with jeans and boots. He wants fellow Odessans to be on the lookout.
"I feel very fortunate, because I didn’t think I was gonna live, I really thought I was going to die," Venable said.
Venable’s license plate number is TX 2617AD. You can contact Odessa Crime stoppers if you have any information on the whereabouts of his truck at (432) 333-TIPS.
