Imagine finding a dog beaten and cut open, and it could all be part of illegal dog fighting.
It was a harsh reality for Chomper, he was found in Odessa, left for dead, but his new owner is fighting back against the brutal sport.
"The neighbors of the owner found him with his throat cut from the back of his ear all the way to his jaw,” said Cara Steadham, Chomper’s new owner.
This is what he looked like when he was rescued by West Texas Diamonds in the Ruff, on the brink of death.
"They beat him in the face, you could see the scars on his face,” said Steadham. “They said it had to have been a cut from a knife on his throat."
The one year old Catahoula is calm and happy on the leash of his new owner, surprising considering Chomper was likely used as bait in a dogfight.
"He could’ve been cut open in order for them to use him as a bait dog,” said Steadham.
Now Cara is fighting her own battle -- to raise awareness of dog fighting and abuse.
"Chomper’s story made me extremely angry, there is a lot of abuse in our town and it’s not being addressed,” said Steadham. “We want our community to be aware and know this can be stopped."
