MIDLAND-On a busy schooldays these streets are filled with cars, despite complaints from neighbors there's no parking ban yet, but the school is taking action.
Neighbors asked for an ordinance restricting parking around Henderson Elementary on four streets during school hours.
"People are parking everywhere, blocking our driveways,” said resident Kay Richmond.
For the second time the measure was tabled after MISD spoke out against it--citing fear of precedent and safety concerns for parents who want to drop off kids.
"We believe that the ordinance would not solve the problem but create additional problems,” said MISD Board of Trustees President Rick Davis. "We didn't want this to set a precedent and get repeated at any of the other schools."
To alleviate the problem the school says it is adding 32 parking spots before next year, communicating better with neighbors, and adding a special drop off.
“There will be an on-campus, pull in driveway for parents to drop their kids off,” Davis said. Davis expects the new parking lot to be completed by January.
The school board says every residence in the neighborhood was notified of the changes in the traffic patterns at the school.
