MIDLAND-Midland is preparing for the worst by updating its emergency alert system. The city is moving forward on a $30,000 emergency alert system with Everbridge.
Beginning August 1, residents will be able to give their cell or home numbers for emergency calls or texts.
A much-needed update to their current system, which sends out calls to landline numbers listed in the phone book.
"Right now we can only use landlines and that’s just not functional,” said Chief Information Officer Sharlett Chowning with The City of Midland “Now if you give us your cell, tell us you want a text message, we'll have that info and be able to communicate.”
You'll be able to sign up online at the city's website and opt-in to a number of alerts like weather or traffic messages beyond just emergency notices.
