Ruidoso Faces $48K Fine Over False Water Data 7/16/13
RUIDOSO, N.M. (AP) - The New Mexico Environment Department has proposed levying a $48,000 fine against the village of Ruidoso for submitting false water quality data to the state.
The department issued its order last week. It stems from an incident last summer in which a supervisor at the Grindstone Treatment Plant ordered a worker to install a filter on a meter that tracks the amount of particles in treated water being released form the plant.
The more particles that are in the water, the harder it is to disinfect.
The village's utility director found out and reported the filter to state officials. The state described the violations as "very serious."
Village Manager Debi Lee did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment. Village officials were planning to discuss the matter Tuesday afternoon.
