Trucking companies can subscribe to a DPS database of positive drug and alcohol violations but, a new program could give them an even closer look at who's really behind the wheel.
This program allows companies to "subscribe" to a system that sends an immediate notification if a driver is issued a drug or alcohol violation.
Currently, the pilot program is only available to insurance and third party companies with plans to extend the program statewide.
"This is about the safety of the motoring public, the industry has a responsibility," says Texas Motor Transportation Association President & CEO, J.D. Esparza.
The hope? To make it accessible to all employers and for all violations.
And the program is being met with overwhelming support from the drivers as well.
“It’s better for all of the drivers I guess, it’s safer,” says one truck driver.
Another says, “If you cannot comply with the law, you should not be on the truck.”
However it is important to point out that Federal regulations require trucks drivers to notify their employers when they do receive violations. This program—once adopted statewide—will ensure that happens immediately, instead of waiting on drivers to get around to it.
