ANDREWS-The City of Andrews officially received two petitions to legalize the sale of alcohol this past Friday.
The political advisory committee, Andrews Expansion Council, submitted 1,449 signatures for two petitions--one to legalize the sale of beer and wine in stores and another to legalize the sale of mixed drinks in restaurants.
The group needs to verify a total of 1,020 signatures to be placed on the ballot, according to Andrews Finance Director Steve Eggleston.
Eggleston says he is about halfway through checking the ballots and is verifying around 90 percent of the signatures, indicating that they should have the total amount needed.
"They are shooting for the November 2013 ballot, which is as soon as it could be," Eggleston said. "They’ve given it to us in plenty of time to make it on that ballot if the signatures check out."
