Plastic Bag Ban Fails And Other Big Items Now Up For Discussion 6/25/13
June 25, 2013
Odessa - Odessa City Council addressed many big-ticket items at the council meeting tonight. The first being the plastic bag ban, which failed to pass by a three to two vote. Council then opened the floor to discussion on a ban of synthetic drugs.
Many members from the “New Day Counseling” group spoke at the city council meeting in hopes of banning stores from selling synthetic drugs. One member of the group was actually on a downward spiral after using the drugs but after joining the group she now pleads the council to ban all synthetic drugs.
“I was on my way to going blind, I have lost a lot of material things, I mean I was really depressed, I was basically in a little hole in my own little world. It changed my life tremendously, I came here in an effort to try to ban this in Odessa because it’s just ruining too many lives, it really is,” said New Day Council Member Whitney Ramos.
The agenda item was only up for discussion at the city council meeting, so no action was taken. However the council says they will research the possibility, but it might be harder to ban than one would think.
“Due to the ingredients changing and the drug testing and the cost etcetera is something that the council is looking at to see how effective and efficient it would be for us,” said Odessa Public Information Officer Andrea Goodson.
Mayor David Turner says he plans on discussing this topic again at the next meeting. Also at tonight’s city council meeting, members passed the first reading of a ban on parking in front yards. The ban will go into affect if passed at the second reading.
