Two ECISD Board Members Support Dr. H.T. Sanchez For Superintendent 6/24/13
June 24, 2013
Odessa - The Ector County Independent School District makes their next move in finding a new superintendent for the upcoming school year. Board members have asked to hold a special meeting next Monday to appoint Dr. H.T. Sanchez as the sole superintendent finalist. Both Nelson Minyard and Luis Galvan motioned to hold that meeting on Monday to possibly hire Dr. Sanchez.
Monday nights meeting in all lasted about two and a half hours, almost an hour of that was spent as public comment with more than a dozen speaking out.
“In the delay of the board, we’ve lost what appears to be a loss of a potential candidate H.T Sanchez to as he is going or appears to be going to Tucson,” said PTA President Malcolm Tyree.
Tyree was one of a dozen people who spoke out in favor of keeping Dr. H.T. Sanchez as superintendent. Two people spoke against it. Part of the delay was that the district did not want to start the search for a new superintendent until after the board member election.
“This is really our first main step to be able to work with the board and get this underway,” said ECISD School Board President Dr. Ray Beaty.
Conversation between the board went back and forth about weather or not to bring in Superintendent search committees to present on Monday. However after much discussion and a motion, the board decided they wanted to only focus on Dr. Sanchez.
If the board decides not to go forth with Dr. Sanchez as the sole candidate, or if Dr. Sanchez turns down the opportunity, Dr. Beaty says they will begin looking at search firms.
Dr. Beaty also says that Monday will be the day that ECISD will make a final decision and have the answers for the public on if Sanchez will stay with the district or not.
According to an article in the "Arizona Daily Star," Dr. Sanchez is not legally bound to the Tucson district because he has not signed a contract. TUSD is set to discuss a contract with Sanchez when the board meets tomorrow. The discussion will be behind closed doors.
The article continues to say that Sanchez is working with a real-estate agent to find a home in Tucson and has been using personal time to make calls and learn more about the school district. If H.T. Sanchez were to stay in Texas, the search firm hired by TUSD would conduct another search free of charge.
(Odessa)- During a special workshop meeting with ECISD Boardmembers, Luis Galvan and Nelson Minyard announced their support to Dr. H.T. Sanchez in hopes of keeping him as Superintendent.
Sanchez is in negociations with the Tucson Unified School District for the Superintendent's position.
The workshop was to formulate plans for a search after Sanchez was approved by the board in Tucson.
During a scheduled board meeting next week, the board will vote on whether to name Sanchez as their lone candidate for Superintendent or go with a National Search.
13 community members also spoke to the board.
11 spoke on behalf of Sanchez, while two spoke on moving forward with a National Search.
