COLORADO CITY-Hailey Dunn played countless games at the Colorado City Middle School Gym. Today, hundreds gathered to honor her memory.
Just a few weeks ago, all hope of finding missing Hailey Dunn alive was lost. Today, a community who rallied around her search says goodbye.
“We heard so much about how Hailey loved her family,” said former teacher Andrea Maxwell while fighting back tears.
"Hailey we love you and we will see you again,” said another school official.
For those who volunteered with the search for Hailey Dunn, today's farewell was a long-time coming—2 years and 28 months to be exact.
Her closest family and friends--including mother Billie Dunn attended the memorial, and said goodbye with video clips.
There was a moving candlelight tribute including a procession by classmates, all for a girl that many didn't even know.
It was bittersweet; some say it's only one step towards closure.
"This is just the beginning, now we are wanting justice and to find out who did this to this little girl,” said Susie Barton, who helped with search efforts. “At least now she is home.”
She’ll always be remembered as the cheerleader with a smile that captured the hearts of many.
The family will have it's own private funeral at an undisclosed date.
