Greenwood ISD To Adapt New Middle School Concept 5/16/13
May 16, 2013
Greenwood - A 51.5 million dollar bond passed by the voters last weekend will allow Greenwood ISD to upgrade technology and security within the school, but that’s not all, a new middle school is set to be built to house the influx of elementary students.
The board of trustees voted, and students who thought they had yet another year to be considered elementary kids, get to move up in status and instantly become secondary students.
“Our elementary is busting at the seams, so it was time to do something,” said Greenwood ISD School Board President Cody Mebane.
Currently the elementary school is pushing the limits, by being “over capacity” by 150 students. To remedy the situation part of the 51.5 million dollar bond that voters passed will be used to construct a new middle school campus. In the meantime, beginning in August, sixth grade students will attend class in portable buildings.
“Somebody was going to be in a portable, and we just felt like this gave us the best option for kids. We felt like the older sixth graders could handle it better than taking either kindergarteners or first graders,” said Mebane.
“It’s just something we have to do in order to get to where we are going to get with the new school,” said Greenwood ISD Parent Teacher Club President Laci Box.
But until the new school is up and going, Mebane says there are a few concerns. “You know just the learning environment is going to be a little bit different than a regular classroom.” However Mebane says that safety will not be overlooked and that combining sixth graders with the older students is not an issue.
“I have been assured that those kids are going to be separated, each of the different wings will house different age level of kids. So I’m confident in Greenwood administration and principles that they are going to keep my kids safe,” said Box.
According to Mebane, students should only have to be in the portables for two years, which is when the construction of the permanent school is set to be complete.
