It was a big day for many Odessa educators as the infamous "Prize Patrol" made surprise visits to several campuses. The bus arrives at Milam Elementary and the volunteers unload…carrying balloons, over-sized checks and noise makers. As they make their way down halls at Milam Elementary school it's pretty clear - something big is about to happen.
The gymnasium is packed with students and teachers and no one knows quite what to expect. Then principal Stacey Ashley makes the big announcement. Milam teachers have received 16 grants.
One by one the president of the Education Foundation begins calling the names of teachers who've won grant money for their innovative projects. This will be the scene at campuses throughout ECISD as the Foundation hands out more than $180,000.
Debbie Fair, new Education Foundation Board Member says, “I've got chill bumps. These teachers are so deserving. They need this money.”
Rebecca Walker, Pre-K teacher at Milam adds, "Our principal does the best she can. The district does the best they can. But the with Education Foundation, we can do so much more. I feel like a kid who won the jackpot."
While some the students may not know exactly what it all means, they can tell it's a big deal. An Education Foundation will now fly in front of the school signaling that a community cares about their education.
Walker says, “We're more than grateful. We're eternally grateful for the foundation and the community. These kids are going out into the community some day. They need to help themselves...and it all starts right here.”
