ANDREWS COUNTY-It’s a big question on everyone's mind in Andrews County. Will voters finally say yes to alcohol this time around?
There's no official petition yet, but a “Legalize Beer & Wine in Andrews” Facebook page has gathered more than 900-likes since it popped up last week.
Andrews County Commissioner Hiram Hubert supported putting the issue up for vote once before--when it was narrowly voted down.
"I want it on the ballot, I want people to decide whether Andrews County should be wet or dry,” said Hubert.
This time, the petition is calling for a vote of only precincts 1 and 4--the two precincts that voted heavily in favor of selling alcohol before. The issue still divides Andrews County.
"I'm for it, you shouldn't have to drive to get a cold beer,” said one Andrews resident.
”We've been here for 38 years and it's been dry and I wish it could stay that way,” said long-time resident Sue Chacon.
Commissioner Hubert says he supports alcohol sales because of the potential tax revenue.
The petition is still pretty far off from a vote -- the group must file officially and will have months to get the more than 600-signatures needed for a vote in the two precincts.
