BIG SPRING-One eyewitness said he confronted 32-year-old Misty Clayton as she was dragging a stolen 47” TV across the Walmart parking lot.
"She came around the side of the building and they chased her into the ravine,” said the eyewitness, who said he saw the whole scene unfold. “She put the TV down and ran before police got there."
Big Spring Police say Clayton ran into some bushes steps from the store and jumped down into a ravine--as officers chased her down, Clayton found the decomposing remains of a man and took money from his pocket.
“During the investigation into the unattended death, it was found that the female suspect in the Theft that had eluded Officers, had also stole property from the pocket of the deceased victim as Officers came upon her,” according to a BSPD release.
Big Spring Sgt. Tony Everett told us over the phone that Clayton took cash from the dead man’s pocket. Clayton is charged with theft, evading arrest and theft from a corpse.
"It’s still wrong whether the person is dead or not,“ said Stephanie, a resident of Big Spring. “I’m glad she is caught, it’s just plain disrespectful.”
"I’m very surprised this would happen her, nothing usually happens like that,” said another eyewitness.”
The death is considered unattended and the body will be sent for autopsy and potential identification. No word yet on cause or time of death.
Now there's no way of connecting it to the body found, but many people in the area tell us there have been homeless camps near that Walmart for years.
