ODESSA-The grandparents of a child kidnapped from the La Tienda grocery store at 826 W. Clements are speaking out.
They say their family is shaken up and their granddaughter Madeline is left with bruises after being kidnapped then found by police shortly after.
"She got some bruises on her neck and well, she's just scared," said Agustin Guzman, grandfather of 6-year old Madeline in an exclusive interview with CBS 7.
17-year-old Israel Ortega is behind bars after allegedly grabbing the 6-year-old child by the throat, taking her from an SUV in the parking lot of the store. It all happened while their mother was inside the store.
But what would drive someone to take a strangers child?
Roman Ortega is the brother of the accused and says that drugs are to blame.
"My brother is on drugs, cocaine, marijuana and synthetic drugs,” Roman Ortega said, he said his brother left the house that morning in desperation.
As the city of Odessa struggles with banning synthetic drugs, his brother says it's another sign of just how dangerous synthetic drugs can be.
The child is recovering with minor injuries -- police say Ortega dropped the child off just blocks away at Lee Street and Mable.
The family is reflecting on the incident, moving forward. Police say Child Protective Services was notified of the incident.
“We're gonna be more careful next time," said Guzman.
Ortega has a message for the victims.
"I’m sorry that my brother did this to you, drugs mess up your brain,” Roman Ortega said. “Addiction is a serious problem."
