There's nothing left but the shell of the charter bus.
It was carrying 30 Crane High School students to a track meet in Sonora when it caught fire off Hwy. 305 just south of McCamey.
"Basically there was just a frame left of the bus,” said Carlin Grammer, Principal of Crane High School. “It had been totally destroyed."
The bus was engulfed in flames by the time the kids made it off.
Administrators say it's one of their newest--a 1998 model, which had new tires.
"We have four charter buses, this is not the newest but the next newest,” Grammer said. “We had just replaced the tires of the bus.”
The principal says the quick thinking of coaches and staff is what kept students out of harm's way.
"Their first priority was making sure that the students were safe and they did that before worrying about anything else,” Grammer said. “So I am extremely proud of the way they handled the situation.”
All the kids are safe—but they lost all their equipment and uniforms, along with some personal items in the fire. So they did not make their track meet after all.
