WEST ODESSA - An oil spill had officials concerned about a possible hazmat issue earlier today in West Odessa.
Jimmy Ellis with the West Odessa Volunteer Fire Department tells CBS 7 that a man driving a truck full of scrap metal was headed toward a junkyard location and was leaking oil.
The spill stretched from 866 and I-20 all the way to Moss Avenue and I-20.
At one point his vehicle passed over scales equipped with monitors that picked up a very low level of radioactivity, setting off an alarm to authorities.
Odessa Police dispatched the WOVFD to the scene where they inspected the spill and found there was no danger. They have since covered the oil with dirt, which will absorb the spill.
Ellis says he believes that the man responsible knew that he was leaking oil and may have been doing it on purpose.
The junkyard has handed over the man’s credentials and charges may be pending.
