MIDLAND-Melvin Marshall knew it was only temporary.

He spent his time at the Salvation Army of Midland looking to the future, thankful to be out of the cold and off the streets.

Marshall is on his own now, but for three months he called the Salvation Army home.

"I honestly didn't know where I was going to live, but I was willing to try anything,” Melvin Marshall said.

The Philadelphia native came to Midland looking for work, but had no place to live.

Although thankful for the help, valuing independence over everything, it was three months too long.

"To be honest, I didn't like staying there at the Salvation Army, but you start crawling before you can walk," Marshall said.

With job placement assistance and counseling, the SA helped him back on his feet. He said the staff works hard to get shelter members back into the workforce.

"I got a job after being there for four days,” Marshall said. “I'm extremely proud to say that there are resources like that to help people that are in dire straights."

Now he has his own place and works full time at The Home Depot.

"You don't have to stay there and neither do you have to live on the street. This is Midland TX, There are a million jobs out there,” Marshall said.

The Salvation Army of Midland offers a number of services to the homeless in our area.
