Midland - Monday through Friday, the homeless have several options to go for a hot meal. But once the weekend comes, a hot meal is hard to come by.

When the Mt. Rose Baptist Church in Midland learned of this, they decided to do something.

The women of Mt. Rose Baptist Church have been dedicating one Saturday a month to feed those in need for exactly one year.

Members say if it weren't for them, many people in town could go the weekend without eating.

There's no such thing as too many cooks in the kitchen at Mt. Rose Baptist Church.

Today these women are preparing the same meal they prepared twelve months ago when they began their hope ministry.

"We're just a small group of women who wanted to be a blessing to our community," Pamela Jackson, director of Women of Excellence at Mt. Rose Baptist Church said.

Opal Green, president of the Women of Excellence ministry, saw a need in our community and got the women in her church on board. Now one Saturday each month, they prepare a warm homemade meal for the homeless.

"They feed them Monday through Friday, so they get one meal during the week. Then on the weekend, they don’t get a meal. We thought this is one at least they'll have one extra meal," Green said.

"We have a lot of great cooks and a lot of these women were looking for something to do in ministry. That’s why we chose this," Jackson said.

One year later, these women say their work of blessing those in need has in turn blessed them.

"The best part is getting to love on them," Jackson said. "Big picture is that we may be able to do more than one Saturday a month."

They hope their labor of love will become something much bigger; that no one will have to go the weekend with out a meal.

The Women of Excellence Ministry is always taking donations for their Saturday meals. If you'd like to give to the ministry, call: 432-559-2269.
