Pecos, TX - Competition is sizzling in the City of Pecos. Many owners say burger sales are booming along with the oil and gas business.
The Pecos Dairy Queen received an award for being the Dairy Queen who sold the most burgers in the entire state, beating Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.
Elsa Palomino, the proud manager of The Pecos Dairy Queen says it’s a trickle down effect. Her main customers are oilfield workers. Some companies order up to 50 double-meat-double-cheese burgers at a time.
“Time is money,” Elsa said, “We have the grill filled with meat patties and everyone has their station so that we can get the burgers out quickly.”
Bill Olgesby with the Economic Development Center says Dairy Queen's success is catching the attention of other businesses. He says more than five fast food restaurants have opened in the past year and Bush's chicken had the best opening day in franchise history.
“You're seeing all these burgers being sold and the sales tax goes back to the city,” Olgesby said.
Elsa says Dairy Queen spent millions of dollars remodeling just to please the new customers.
“They decided to invest in Pecos and build a new Dairy Queen,” she said.
But she says the new look is just the cherry on top.
*The Pecos DQ owned by Perry and Shiela Anderson won the 2012 BIG BUSTER Award at the Annual Texas Dairy Queen Convention in San Antonio, TX during January for selling the most Hungr-Busters in the State.
Records show employees made over 113, 600 burgers in different variations in just one year.
With an average cook time of 5 minutes that's over 9,400 hours of just cooking burgers alone.
