New Galvanizing Plant to Bring Diversity to Big Spring Economy 1/25/13

Big Spring - As the oil boom continues to carry the economy in Big Spring, their Economic Development Corporation has been working to diversify their economy. One way they're doing that is through a galvanizing plant.
Boyce Galvanizing is the only one of its kind between Arizona and Dallas. Members of the EDC say it will provide to the economy in ways oil cannot.
On the outside it may look like your typical steel building, but once inside, you can tell it's more than that. A row of large containers in the ground combined, create a business unlike anything in west Texas, galvanizing.
"We take other peoples product or fabricated steel and coat it with a zinc coating," CEO of Boyce Galvanizing, Cole Morgan said. "You'll see guardrails, highway signs, median cables."
When Morgan decided he wanted to start a galvanizing plant, he researched all areas and decided Big Spring was where he and his family would call home.
"Us being within a 100-mile radius of Midland, Odessa and Abilene, the location was just perfect for us to be here," he said.
The Economic Development Corporation not only saw his vision, but they saw a business that would bring diversity to their community.
"We love the oil and gas industry, but we need to think long term. We think this plant will bring diversity to our community," Terry Wegman, Executive Director of the EDC said.
Today crews brought in a crane to install the 91-thousand pound kettle in their building, bringing them one step closer to opening.
Morgan says not only do they have businesses waiting for them to open, but they also have a stack of employment applications waiting as well.
"It brings the opportunity for the people of Big Spring and the surrounding communities to look into a different type of career and work place," he said.
Morgan says they hope to be open and operating within two weeks.
Boyce Galvanizing is located on North Hwy 87 in Big Spring.
