West Texas Senator Kel Seliger tells CBS 7 Closer Look today that he believes some major changes need to happen in the curriculum and graduation requirements for our high school students. The senator has filed a bill which would change the current graduation requirements which require students to take four years of Math, Science, English and Social studies. His bill would reduce that to four credits in English, three in Math and Social Studies, two in Science and Foreign Language.
Seliger's bill also would eliminate the 15 exams in core subjects required for graduation. Instead, students would need to pass five tests in Reading, Algebra 1, U.S. History, Writing and Biology. They would also have to take a fine arts credit and one in physical education as well as ten elective credits.
Senator Seliger says the changes wouldn't be "dumbing down" requirements for graduation, but rather improving on the unworkable testing program we have now. Seliger replaced Democrat Judith Zaffirini as chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee several months ago.
