BIG SPRING- His name is The Scary Guy—and that’s his legal name.
He’s not who you’d expect to come speak about bullying.
He’s a tough-talking, former tattoo artist covered in ink and with a message.
“The real power, the real stuff going on in communities all over the world, is underlying harassment and intimidation in the hallways of our work and in our schools,” said Scary.
And he’s coming to Big Spring Junior High School to teach students, as well as the community, they can take full responsibility for their behavior and stop the negativity.
“I’m going to upset people… tip some apples carts,” said Scary. “Truths are going to come forward. Some people say ‘let that alone’ and I’m going to say ‘no, we’re going to talk about it all’. We’re going to bubble it all up.”
Beyond the name, what’s most shocking is how Scary defies the squeaky clean image of expected educators.
That’s one of the reasons why Junior High Principal Dalia Benavides invited Scary to her campus.
“When I came across the videos of Scary, I thought maybe we need someone like him to grab people’s attention,” said Benavides. “Someone that looks mean, but is not.”
Benavides said a visit from Scary may be unconventional, but a much needed conversation on bullying.
“I think all of us have to be shocked into realizing how bad the problem is and how we can fix it,” said Benavides.
The Scary Guy will speak at Big Spring High School Auditorium Tuesday, January 22, at 6:30 p.m.
The program is free and open to the public.
