Residents Respond to White Activist Fliers 12/28/12

Odessa, TX - Odessans are shocked to find political propaganda landing on their doorsteps, stamped with a swastika.

CBS 7 confirmed that at a few neighborhoods got these fliers.

“It was crazy at first I was thinking they were profiling me because I'm white,” said an Odessan who prefers to be anonymous, “I asked the other neighbors and they received them too.”

He says he wants to speak out against what he found in his yard.

“It just scares me on what they could do to me or anybody else,” he said.

The flier decorated with swastikas gave information about a group called the National Socialist Movement (NSM) based out of Michigan.
They announced they now have a local sector in West Texas.

“Hate travels,” the resident said, “Especially with the economic growth we are having, it’s bringing in all kinds of hate.”

This is an excerpt from the flier:

“We ask what can people from a third world country contribute to our economy? The only ones that benefit are big business and the illegal aliens. How can people from Nations who still chop off hands with machetes, rape babies, grow drugs, and produce little industrial innovation be of any purpose to our great Nation? They merely wish to leech off of our resources and fill jobs for lower pay, jobs that should be given to our citizens and their families at a realistic wage.”

The statements didn't sit well with Art Leal, president of civil rights group Una Voz Unida who says these kinds of white supremacist groups are showing more of themselves in West Texas.

“True meaning of it (the flier) is simply hate,” Leal said, “I was shocked, but at the same time not surprised there has been activity like this going on.”

“I’m concerned that they are going to get leverage and recruit,” Gene Collins with the local NAACP says their message of economic troubles is just masking the discrimination.

As for some residents, they say the fliers are a freedom of speech, but not welcome around their homes.

“Throwing pamphlets is one thing,” said one resident, “But that can lead to marching and everything else.”

This was a statement on the CBS 7 Facebook page from NSM:

To all west Texas, we ARE NOT A HATE GROUP. we are a political party for the best intrest of WHTIE/EUROPEAN PEOPLE. We are using our 1st amendment right of free speech. You will never hear us use any type of foul lanuage or hate speech. We just want to get our message out to the other like minded WHITE americans. [sic]
